• I guess one of my kids bought this book by accident. It was just a few bucks, and I played the game once on my kid's tablet, so I read the book, after tightening security to prevent future purchases.
  
  It includes the phrase, "hold the mouse button as fast as possible." How is that possible? I can repeatedly click the mouse fast, but how do you repeatedly hold?
  
  Also, my tablet doesn't have a mouse. This book needs a better introduction regarding which devices it is covering, and what is out of scope.

• I have read all 19 Joe Pickett novels and have recommended the series to a lot of people, but this is the last. The body count has just grown way too high and too gratuitous in such a violent world as ours has become. While I embrace poetic license, this is just more than I can tolerate.
• “Wolf Pack” is C. J. Box at his absolute best. I thought the long-running series was in decline after “Vicious Circle” and “The Disappeared.” But this latest book represents a full turnaround. Most readers will finish this compelling novel in one or two sittings.
  
  Its plot is intricate, relentless, and up-date; the good guys are nuanced; and the villains come in various forms—some plain evil, others merely contemptible. No surprise then that there’s lots of violence in the story. But killing—whether of animals or people—always has consequences in Joe Pickett’s world.
• C. J. Box never disappoints with his series. I have read all 19 books in the Joe Pickett series and always preorder the next one as soon as it becomes available, I hope there are many more to come. When you start reading this novel you can’t put it down, I just received it today and read the entire book. I would highly recommend this book to all, but especially to those who hunt and enjoy the great outdoors. Can’t wait for the next one to see how he tops this one. C.J. Box is one of my favorite authors.
• My review of “Wolf Pack” came a little more slowly, and with more deliberation than I normally give. This is because I got the Audible edition at the same time I bought the edition.
  
  STAND-ALONE It can be read as a stand-alone, but the greatest appreciation will come for devotees of the series.
  
  CLIFFHANGER. No. Although there surely will be more Pickett novels, this does not end with a cliffhanger.
  
  If I were to rate this only based on the Audible narration, I’d be hard-pressed to rate it four stars, as the writing comes across as just a bit too much of an info dump. However, when I read the version, the info dump is much more invisible, so I am rating it more highly.
  
  WRITING & EDITING Professional. The flow is good, and the historical bits are interesting. Sometimes the inter-agency tension seems too drawn out, but, as someone who has witnessed just how antagonistic the various factions within the federal and state agencies can be, it had the feeling of authenticity.
  
  BLUSH FACTOR The number of eff words is more than you’ll want to read with your prayer group, probably, but it is not excessive for most folks. Certainly not for me. I mention it only for those for whom it might annoy.
  
  No graphic sex, but some of the violence might disturb a few readers. I appreciated the realistic portrayal, though.
  
  BOTTOM LINE
  
  I enjoyed this murder mystery and consider it a fine Action-Adventure.
• Much of the storyline was illogical, with inaccurate statistics that were used to justify FBI activities. The body count, and the level of mayhem made this book extremely distasteful.
• Never read a Pickett book that wasn't five stars worthy, and this one is definitely worth five and more, if they were available. Joe is not the normal easy going Game Warden he normally portrays, as he and Nate are more in the justice mode. You will find yourselves wondering when the morbid stories will cease and tell retaliation will begin. Don't give up yet, as the fun will soon begin!
  There are many different aspects to Wolf Pack than most of the Pickett series contain, but the storylines, and the bad characters, are just as devious as all other stories have been. I have to admit some stories go far beyond Joe's normal restraints, but hang in there and you will enjoy each and every exciting episode as they begin to fall in place.
  Without hesitation, I definitely recommend this exciting masterpiece by the mastermind.behind the Joe Pickett series, Mr. C. J. Box. He certainly has had the uncanny ability to release nineteen exciting masterful performances of this series, most all of them were five star masterpieces! Fortunately I have had the opportunity to read each and every one of them in order. I anxiously await the next exciting adventure, although I know it will be at least a year before it will arrive! If you don't buy this outstanding story, the loss will definitely be yours!😤

  I love this series and I love this author. I've read almost everything written by him, including all of this lengthy series, and he never disappoints (and I'm working on catching up on the couple of books I've missed after I finish this review). Wyoming happens to be one of my favorite states too so that adds a lot of appeal.
  
  This is book #19 in the Joe Pickett series about Game Warden Joe Pickett of the Wyoming Fish and Game Department. Joe has his job back (after losing it temporarily in book #18) with the help of former Wyoming Governor Rulon acting as his attorney. And actually he gained some great benefits during the process.
  
  In this tale, Joe ends up working with a female game warden from the next District over trying to track down an illegal drone operator who is harming wildlife. They get help from his falconer best friend Nate Romanowski.
  
  Added into the mix are the FBI, the DOJ and some dangerous out-of-towners.
  
  If you've enjoyed Box's other books, you'll surely love this one. Box is a consistently fine author and I highly recommend this latest book.
  
  I'm off now to read SHOTS FIRED, a collection of ten short stories based in Joe Pickett's world, that I somehow missed before this.

The author identifies 6 causes of climate change: 1) Variations in the tilt of the earth’s axis - 41,000 year cycle. 2) Precession (wobbly spin) of the axis- 26,000 year cycle. 3) Slight variable eccentricity in the earth’s orbit 4) Volcanism 5) Significant variations in the earth’s orbit around the sun, and 6) Anthropogenic change; the least influential.
Much of the author’s conclusions are based on teeth and bone analysis which he admits are still in its early stages. I do believe he over-emphasized the ‘plague of Cyprian’, and in general he too readily accepts the force of 4th century urbanization and the positive influence of the Church. He speaks of ‘obscure turmoil’ on the steppes (P.190) but does not seem able to show a definitive linkage with the effects of climate change. He gives a significant role to the force of the barbarian invasions, which overwhelmed the tremendous organic strength of a renewed and reformed Roman Empire.
The best chapter was the discussion of the bubonic plague in the age of Justinian. The author feels that the combination of war, plague and climate change (LALIA- Late Antique Little Ice Age) was devastating. Yet, the author has no firm explanation of the ‘years with no summer’ of this period. He suggests volcanism or a meteor impact, but cannot name any suspect volcano or evidence of a meteor strike. The end of the book is overly verbose, philosophical and wanders into the apocalyptic.
The Fate of Rome is superbly researched with outstanding notes and bibliography. The maps unfortunately are often unreadable in the print version, but are fine in the kindle edition (where the footnotes are not as convenient."

• This is a great book. I read a lot of ancient and non-so-ancient history. One of my major interests is in the rise and fall of civilizations. I'm a big fan of Peter Turchin's books on the causes of rise and fall. If you liked William H. McNeill's Plagues & Peoples and want to read something newer buyt focused on just one society and with decades more understanding of genetic history of diseases and of archaeology of the Roman Empire then read Harper's book.
  
  Harper does a good job of telling you what is known and what is speculation. For example, the plague during Marcus Aurelius's reign (the Antonine Plague) is very likely smallpox. But the Plague of Cyprian from the 250's AD still is a mystery. Might be smallpox. But more likely either an early severe influenza (think Spanish Flu of 1918) or a filovirus (which includes Marburg and Ebola in the family). It is possible we might know some day.
  
  The Readers Digest 3 sentences version of the book Harper thinks the cooling and droughts brought on by the end of the Roman Climate Optimum (during which it rained in Alexandria 11 months of the year!) and the influx of diseases enabled by the trading routes of Pax Romana) so weakened the Roman Empire it could not defend its borders. He also throws in state development along the borders as another cause. But mainly he points to disease and drought and cooling as the forces that brought down the empire.
  
  While I find Harper's case compelling I think Harper is leaving out one cause of collapse that Peter Turchin emphasizes waning of ability of a state to harness a collective will. Look at the Roman Republic during the first 2 Punic wars by contrast. Italy had Carthaginian armies rampaging around for years. But the Romans refused to consider themselves defeated no matter how many battles they lost. They just kept coming back and fighting. Their willingness to take very heavy losses and not really feel defeated was essential for the survival of the Roman Republic. But centuries of rule by Emperors left the Romans feeling not so personally responsible for the survival of the state.
  
  I'm not disputing that absent the diseases and climate change that the Roman Empire would have lasted much longer. But I suspect earlier generations of Romans would not have been so easily defeated by climate change, mass killer epidemics, and big tribal invasions.

Jigsaw was the MC’s treasurer. He was moody, solemn, brooding, grumpy and angry at life. He mostly stayed away from the women and children and vowed to never get close to a woman again.

Isabelle “Izzy” Monroe had a horrible upbringing. As a result, she was independent, self sufficient, void of friends and family, and totally in control of any interactions with others. She was the new tattoo artist in town and immediately proved her talent and strong warrior status among the MC clan.

Jig and Izzy had off the charts chemistry from the start. They both had tons of baggage and refused to form attachments so they stayed away from each other as much as possible; however, their paths kept crossing once the MC old ladies befriended her. Atlas took us through their interactions alongside an MC plot that was a continuation from previous books.

I loved both Jigsaw and Izzy. They were broken souls but they fit together perfectly. I enjoyed their push and pull, bantering and the developments when layer upon layer were peeled back from both of them. They had tough exteriors but wonderful prizes buried deep within.

All in all, it was action packed, sexy, somewhat suspenseful and a quick and entertaining read. Our favorite characters from past books were central to the storyline as well as a few new ones. Atlas also continued to build the anticipation for Copper and Shell’s story, which thankfully is up next in Copper and I can’t wait!"

• I started out reading Lilly Atlas books when she first published the No Prisoners series and now have added the Hell's Handlers series to my collection. To heck with reading them via Unlimited, I immediately purchase each and every time Ms. Atlas has a new book coming out on pre-order. Jigsaw is the latest in the Hell's Handlers series and is the story of Izzy, a tattoo artist and female MMA fighter, and Jigsaw the club treasurer who is a widower still struggling years after the murder of his family. The plot is riveting, the character development is phenomenal, and the author does a wonderful job with story continuity from one book to the next. This would be a five star read for me except for one minor ongoing irritant...the incorrect and repetitive usage of discrete vs. discreet. Please Ms. Atlas, have your beta readers or editor look up the definitions and correct these errors! You deserve five stars for your writing but I am finally deducting a star for editing as this has continued, without correction, throughout all your books.
• How much do I love you let me count the way's. Lily Atlas is a one click buy for me, she does not dissapoint, this is the 3rd book in this series and I have loved them all so far and can't wait for the next. Jig, this character was awesome, so broken but strong, he is an Alpha protector to the 10th degree, he is also so lost that he almost did not give our girl a chance who has her own issues of trust, but boy, Izzy is one tough cookie, she is an MMA fighter, a tatoo artist and so not Jig's type, well thakfully there is hope and the build up was awesome, their interaction was stellar and their friendship i.e love (they did not know it) was off the charts. This book had just enough dark to make it a worthwhile MC read, enough Mc tention to make us grit our teeth and hope the bad guy's would not get one over the MC, let me tell you it was close very close. Over all this book was solid 4.5 stars for me and a re-read and let me tell you when I say re-read I mean it, it does not happen alot, but there you go. So of you are in the mood for hot broken Alpah and a heroine who is total bad.....s and a bit broken but not defeated, then you will love this book. Enjoy
• Jigsaw wasn’t alway this moody biker guy he once was a nerd getting his PHD until someone broke into his house and killed his wife and daughter and almost killed him. But that all reshaped him into the man he is now. Izzy is the new tattoo artist at the only shop in town and she doesn’t trust people because they all leave and disappoint her. So they both have issues that drive them to want the fight and beat on people that’s where Jig see her in her first fight after coming to town. He knows he is attracted to her but he doesn’t want a relationship with any women. And Izzy doesn’t want one Esther but she sure would like to jump his bones. But of corse the MC is still having trouble with the Gray Dragons and they will cause more trouble for them. So enjoy the read and see if they get a HEA.
• This third book in the Hell's Handlers series is another winner. Izzy was great and I really loved Jigsaw. A lot of trauma and triggers in this book but it was handled well and never got too descriptive. I'm very excited for the next book in the series, Copper.

• Absolutely loved this story...Jigsaw and Izzy are perfect for eachother. Jig is a character you love and feel his pain. The author gave him a Warrior Queen in Izzy. Jig needed a strong woman who could hold her own and handle him. Atlas does an amazing job expressing all the emotions running through these characters. The series keeps getting better and better. • Took me awhile to relate to this book. Jig was so out of life and Izzy was too mad at the world. Their personalities clashed from day one. He was still upset about the death of his wife and child and Izzy was so used to just taking care of herself wanting no emotional ties. Loved this book but one major question...........what about LEFTY!!!!!!!
